  • F.A.Q: CitiDISK HD( bundled with hard disk )

CitiDISK HD is a portable, self-powered and controlled by camera unit; it captures DVCPro, DVCPro 50 and DVCPro HD streams at the time as shooting to tape, stores video as user-selectable, RawDV, AVI’s or QuickTime MOV in a FAT32 file system. Best fit for Panasonic AJ-HPX3000G, HPX2000, HPX800, HPX500, SPC700, HVX200, 200E, 202 and HDX900 camera. The unit is also backward compatible with DV50 and standard DV(DV25), miniDV camera too, but NOT suitable for HDV camera. Note: HD camera can shot HiDef video too but the video is compressed by intra-frame DV compression only, totally different as what HDV camera produced( MPEG2-LongGOP ).

    1. I'm have been using CitiDISK HD for a long time, it works great, now it captures one file only. How does it happen and how to resolve it? - Top

The CitiDISK reserves about 900 file names in "Media" folder for each video recording, if user drag-n-drop the video file in Trash and empty them, only the video data space would be reclaimed but not the file names because Computer Operating System wants to keep the "Undelete" feature in case user accidently delete files and want to get them back. Instead of writing the Trashed file name as clean, it marks them as "Unwanted", ends up taking the reserved 900 file names. Once it is full, CitiDISK will only reuse the last file name space.

To re-gain the 900 file names space back, you would need to re-format the CitiDISK:
How to get back the folders and re-format the hdd, please find it at " www.shining.com", "Driver & Update", "FAQ", the top question of "CitiDISK HD" category. - Updated: December 26, 2007

    2. Do I need to re-format the CitiDISK HD? When, why must follow the procedures, and how to re-format the CitiDISK HD in PC & Mac? - Top

    When:
    1. Manafacturer suggests that user always keep the hard disk in a non-fragmented, clean and continueously way of recording; especially the DV100( DVCProHD ) incoming data rate is very high. However, remember to back up the video clips before re-formating the hard disk.
    2. Start the recording, the REC light turns on but ends up no footage. The number of clips can be used reaches the maxmium due to "Drag-to-trash" marked the clip name to "not-used" instead of clean, reusable.

    Why:
The CitiDISK HD MUST be formatted in 1). FAT32 file system, include 2). a "Movie" folder, 3). a "Media" folder and 4). a "Project" text file within the "Movie" folder. The CitiDISK HD would not peform the video capturing correctly if one on the objects described above does not exisit.

How to re-format the CitiDiSK HD in
    a. In PC/XP:
Download the "Shining Utility Suite" v77r510.zip" from "www.shining.com", "Driver & Update" page
or install it from the CD included in the package, Install it first.
Connect the CitiDISK HD to PC/XP system and power it on. Wait till GREEN light be solid.
Start the "Shining Utility Suite" program, choose "Hard Drive Setup", select "DV Disk", the program will show each operating hard disk in the system, choose the one has the size close to the CitiDISK HD, click on "Create DVDisk" to start the operation. Once the process is done, the unit is re-formatted in FAT32 and above three objects are automatically created by the utility program.
Exit and "Safe remove" the CitiDISK HD from the system.
Note: Details of how to use the Utility can be found in CD and "Driver& Update" page. File name is "Utility Manual v20.pdf".

    b. In MacX:
Connect the CitiDISK HD to a Mac computer and power it on. Starts up the "Disk Utility" in "MacX", "Application", "Utilities" folder. Choose the one says "xxx GBytes Shining....", click on "Erase" and choose "MS-DOS file system" in VolumeFormat, then, click on "Erase"( bottom right ) to start the process. Once the process is completed it means the formatting is done, you would need to create above three objects manually.
First open the CitiDISK HD just re-formatted, go to top bar find "File", select "New Folder", name it as "Movie", open the "Movie" folder, and go through the same process to create another new folder name it as "Media". Finally, invoke the "TextEdit" in "Application" folder, and click on
"File", "Save As" this 0-byte file, name it as "Project" in "rtf" file type in "Movie" folder.

    3. What long shall user wait after stopping current video clip and before starting next video clip? - Top

Three seconds is minimum to close the current video clip and start the next video clip, especially in HD recording. - Updated: January 13, 2007

    4. Where to find the DV25, DV50, DV100 & M2T codecs in various wrapper like AVI & MOV for CitiDISK HD? - Top

"Media Player Classic" is a freeware can be found in:
"http://www.divx-digest.com/software/media_player_classic.html" and select "Download" to retrieve the file, install in to your system.

Manfacturer tested and found it works with most of the codecs in various wrappers for most of the editing sofwares in the market. - Updated: December 4, 2007

    5. I have a Panasonic HVX200 with CitiDISK HD -120G, everything I record on the hard drive is squeezed horizontally and has a solid green bar covering the right third of the image after the video is imported by Adobe CS3( PC version )? Why and how to resolve it? - Top

The Adobe Premiere CS3 3.0 or 3.1 are supposed to be the latest, greatest release by Adobe. In the Project settings, there are even DVCProHD( 1080i & 720p ) selections available. But, Adobe did not explicitly tell user they need to have the DVCProHD, DVCPro50 and DVCPro codec plugin installed first because such codec does not come with the Premiere, user is required to purchase the codec from third party like "MainConcept".

Note: A "CollectionOfDVCProCodec.zip" can be found in "www.shining.com", "driver & update", "CitiDISK HD" section. - Updated: January 28, 2008

    6. By using the QuickErase function, how long does it take to erase the whole video clips in "Media" folder? - Top

While the "QuickErasing" function started, user should check the "PowerAccess" light blinks from BLUE to PURPLE and back & forth. The lenght of time of "QuickErasing" the video clips really depends on how many clips accumulated in the "Media" folder. Good way to determine whether the "QuickErasing" function is completed or not is to wait for at lesat 5 seconds after the ""PowerAccess" turns solid BLUE. - Updated: January 13, 2007

    7. The QPlay button does not play the video into Panasonic HDW900 camera's viewfinder. - Top

No. Panasonic HDW900 VTR mode allows tape to be played back to the viewfinder, however, the live video is still active which prevents the CitiDISK HD to QPlay the video to the camera.

Note: Must install the CitiDISK HD's R5, Oct. 31, 2007 or later firmware so as to QPlay the DV100 video to HDW900 camera. - Updated: November 7, 2007

    8. What are tested camera supported by the CitiDISK HD? - Top

    Panasonic AJ-HPX3000G, HPX2000, HPX500, HVX200, HDX900 (DV100 & 50 & 25)

    10. While importing the Quicktime video into FCP, a warning message saying "Such file is not optimized for FCP.", is this warning message real important? - Top

Don't worry about it. User can turn it off when it pops up at the first time.
Reason being that the CitiDISK HD minimum recording unit is 32K bytes and Quicktime header does not need such a big memory space. Since the the processor of the CitiDISK HD is not as powerful as G5 and it is easily overwhelmed with optimizing the data and capturing the 100 Mbps incoming video at the same time; so, the CitiDISK HD is designed to capture the video at first and let G5 CPU do the processing later on. - Updated: January 31, 2007

    11. Can I use the CitiDISK HD in conjuction with Panasnoic HVX200 camera without P2 cards? - Top

Yes. As the firmware implementation of Jan. 31, 2007. You can still capture the live video from HVX200 camera if there is no P2 cards inserted. However, you would need to manually start/stop the recording by pressing the REC button on the CitiDISK HD instead of the REC button on the camera.
Engineers are working on the solution to start/stop the CitiDISK HD recording while no P2 card inserted. - Updated: January 31, 2007

    12. How long shall I wait to start next recording after stopping current recording? - Top

Allow at least 3-second gap before starting next recording and after stopping current recording due to each HD seconds data rate is about 16 MBytes, farily large volume of FAT table records created. And they need to write back to the CitiDISK HD, too. - Updated: January 31, 2007

    13. Would Adobe Premiere 2.0 support DVCProHD, DVCPro50? If no Maxtrox hardware installed, what's the alternative? - Top

No. The Adobe Premiere 2.0 does not support DVCProHD, DVCPro50 codec if NO Matrox Axio HD hardware card installed.
However, as of March 20, 2007, manufacturer learns that M-Key/100( a USB dongle), just announced by Matrox, with associated software that allows user to use all Matrox Video For Window software if no Maxtrox hardware installed in the system.
Here are the list of M-Key/100's codecs supported:
    1. DV/DVCam/DVCPro/DVCPro50/DVCProHD
    2. Mpeg2 I-Frame in SD & HD
    3. Matrox uncompressed in SD & HD
    4. Matrox uncompressed+Alpha in SD & HD
    5. Matrox HDV
    6. Matrox offline HD
Purchasing information of M-Key/100 can be found in "http://www.matrox.com/video/support/tokens/home.cfm?model=mkey".

Note: One bug found by manufacturer in M-Key/100 software --
If DVCProHD PAL 1080i AVI file generated by the CitiDISK HD imported & dragged into time-line, the Adobe Premiere 2.0 with Project setting as "Matrox - HD, 1080i-25" will show mosaic video, not editable. However, manufacturer is able to prove it by setting it as 1080i-50, then the video would be OK but RED line shows rendering is required. Such problem does not show in NTSC 1080i-30 system. Bug has been reported to Matrox.

    14. Do I need to power on/off the CitiDISK HD if changing the recording format of camera? What are the powering on/off sequences? - Top

    Yes.
Here are the procedure to shoot online video:
    1. Connect the FireWire cable for both the camera & the CitiDISK HD while both powered OFF to prevent power surge.
    2. Power on the camera first.
    3. Choose the recording format on the camera like 1080i/60p or DVCPro50 or DV.
    4. Power on the CitiDISK HD second. Let the unit re-sync. itself to the camera, wait till the GREEN light be SOLID before recording.
    5. Start/stop the recording. Should changing the camera recording format is needed, make sure powering off the CitiDISK HD now. Then, go to step 3, 4, 5.
    6. When done shooting, power off the CitiDISK HD first, power off the camera second, disconnect the FireWire cable last.

    4. Updating CitiDISK DV-HDV-HD Firmware v181HDonly.pdf: How to use the firmware uploader v1.81?

    -- New Features:
    1. New Firmware Uploader v1.81 allows user to select Matrox Axio, Canopus Edius4 in AVI, Quicktime for Final Cut or RawDV.

--- AVI file format selection including standard AVI2, Matrox Axio and Canopus Edius4

The Matrox Axio user must have Axio hardware and software plug-in installed for Adobe Premiere 2.0( 1.5 won't work ).
The standard AVI2 uses standard dv codec for DV25 but Axio codec for DV50 & DV100.
The Canopus Edius user must have Edius4 and USB Dongle from Canopus if it is selected.
Captured video clips are able to play by Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 provided above necessary codec plug-in installed.
Project setting for Axio and Edius4 user must select 1080i/60i/30p or 720p/30p for DVCProHD and select 480/30p
DVCPro 50, DVCPro to avoid rendering each clip even the recording format is set at 24p or 24pA due to the Firewire has only one standard and that is either DV100 for DVCProHD, DV50 for DVCPro 50 and DV25 for DVCPro.

--- MOV file format selection for Final Cut Pro & Canopus Edius4 & Avid DV XPress Pro

Project setting for FCP user must select 1080i/60i/30p or 720p/30p for DVCProHD and select 480/30p
DVCPro 50, DVCPro even the recording format is set at 24p or 24pA due to the Firewire has only one standard and that's either DV100 for DVCProHD, DV50 for DVCPro 50 and DV25 for DVCPro.

    --- Why 720p/30p and 1080/60i/30p??
If user is shooting in film camera mode by 720p/12 frames/second rate, the HVX200 camera actually inserts extra frames making up to 60 frames per second to meet DV100 specification. Since the CitiDISK HD always reports 2-frame-per-chunk in 720p and 1 frame-per-chunk in 1080 mode, and 720p screen resolution is half of 1080, so, both 1080 & 720 both end up 30 frames/second in NTSC and 25 frames/second.

    --- Are CineForm-AVI & Raylight-AVI codec supported?
No. Both are intermediate codec not in standard DV-AVI form.

    2. Add in support for HVX200/PAL and HVX20E.
    3. Re-enable "DV Control" by camera function provided a not-full-P2 card inserted.

    -- Problem fixed:
    1. While in recording, REC light went on but not being able to turn it off. fixed.

    -- Known issues:
    1. "P2-MXF" -- P2 card like folder structure and MXF file format supported are not included in this release
    2. "QPLAY" & "PLAYALL" -- both functions are disabled for DVCProHD, but DVCPro50 and DVCPro are OK.
The "QPLAY" & "PLAYALL" choose for DV not DVCPro to playback, so, user must select DV mode even the video was shot as DVCPro.
    3. Lab. test shows the 100G & 120G can record as long as you like in RawDV/DVCProHD recording, however, the 120G model seems not able to keep up the incoming data rate and automatically turns off the recording preventing the "skip-frame" in MOV & AVI modes. But the 100G works much better. Engineers are working on this issue now, will release it once it is available.

    -- Technical tips:
    1. How to activate DV Control function on HVX200?
Turn on HVX200, press "Menu" button, choose "Other function", set "1394 CONTROL" selection to "BOTH".
The CitiDISK HD automatically receive the commands from HVX200 to start and stop the RECording; however, a non-full P2 card or non-full tape is required to start/stop the DV Contorl function. If P2 card is full during the recording, user must manually press the REC( RED light ) button to turn off the recording.

    2. Connect & disconnect --
Always connect the FireWire cable to Camera( or computer ) and the CitiDISK HD first while the CitiDISK HD in power OFF. Power on the camera( or computer ) first, and turn on the POWER( GREEN, close to the power socket ).
Alwayas power off the CitiDISK HD first, then, disconnect from the camera/computer.
Slide the black safety swith toward the power socket position before operating the CitiDISK HD unit, and slide it away from power socket while not in use.

    3. On-line Recording -- There are three objects in FAT32 file system required for the CitiDISK HD to online shoot video.
They are "Movie" folder and "Media" folder in "Movie" folder and a "Project" text file in the "Movie" folder.
If either one three objects missing, the GREEN & RED lights will blink and you cannot shoot video.

How to put back those three objects(re-format):
    a. In PC/XP:
Download the "Shining Utility Suite" v77r510.zip" from "www.shining.com" "Driver & Update" page or install it from the CD included in the package, Install it first.
Connect the CitiDISK HD to PC/XP system and power it on. Wait till GREEN light be solid.
Start the "Shining Utility Suite" program, choose "Hard Drive Setup", select "DV Disk", the program will show each operating hard disk in the system, choose the one has the size close to the CitiDISK HD,
click on "Create DVDisk" to start the operation. Once the process is done,
Exit and "Safe remove" the CitiDISK HD from the system.
Note: Details of how to use the Utility can be found in CD and "Driver & Update" page. File name is "Utility Manual v20.pdf".

    b. In MacX:
Connect the CitiDISK HD to MacX system and power it on.
Invoke the "Disk Utility" in "MacX", "Application", "Utilities" folder.
Choose the one says "xxx GBytes Shining....", click on "Erase" and choose "MS-DOS file system" in VolumeFormat, then, click on "Erase"( bottom right ) to start the process.
Once the process is completed you would need to create above three objects manually.
First open the CitiDISK HD just re-formatted, go to top bar find "File", select "New Folder", name it as "Movie", open the "Movie" folder, and go through the same process to create another new folder name it as "Media".
Finally, invoke the "TextEdit" in "Application" folder, and click on "File", "Save As" this 0-byte file, name it as "Project" in "rtf" file type in "Movie" folder.

    4. After recording and ready for next recording --

It is suggested do a "file sytsem" integrity check every time you bring up the CitiDISK HD to PC/XP.
Go to "MyComputer", click on right mouse button on the CitiDISK HD, click "Property", "Tool",
"Check Now", and check "Automatically fix file system error" and "Start" the process.

Copy all of the recorded/selected clips in "Media" folder into other drive before editing.
DO NOT drag the folder since they are needed for next recording.
DO NOT drag the unwanted clips into trash and empty the files from it. Use "QuickErase" function described in the "QuickUsageGuide" to keep the CitiDISK HD from fragmentation.

    5. Offline coping -- copying the P2 card contents to the CitiDISK HD.
Turn on HVX200, press "Menu" button, choose "Other function", set "PC Mode" to "1394 Host".
Connect the CitiDISK HD and power it ON. Wait till GREEN light solid. Press-n-Hold the black button beside the "MCR" more than 3 seconds. Press "Menu", P2 card content thumbnail shows up, press the center button to select "Format" function to start formatting the CitiDISK HD and copy P2 card's contents to the CitiDISK HD later. Power off the CitiDISK HD and connect it back to computer, you should see all of the P2 card's content copied.
Note: HVX200 will re-format the CitiDISK HD as its Linux file system, user must re-format the CitiDISK HD back to FAT32 file system with three objects described in "Online Recording" section.

    6. Battery care -- Slide the black main switch OFF while not in use.
    7. DO NOT purposely jar, bump, shake the CitiDISK HD while in recording.

    20. Do I need to format the CitiDISK HD, if so, how? - Top

There is no need to do so except:
    1. three objects missing -- "Movie" folder, "Media" folder in "Movie" folder and "Project" text file in "Movie" folder are MUST to have for on-line capturing.
    2. File system is not FAT32 after performing off-line copying the P2 card's content to the CitiDISK HD.

How to format the CitiDISK HD in FAT32 and bring back above three objects?

    21. Having problem to start recording if the internal battery of the CitiDISK is fully depleted even though the wall-mount power adapter is attached. - Top

The internal battery will draw large current to charge itself when %5 low capacity threhold met, which divert large portion of incoming external power to operate the unit.
Solution -- Power off the CitiDISK and put it on charge for about 15 minutes. - Updated: February 16, 2007

    22. A RawDV DVCProHD video clip is not playable in QT7! - Top

Our lab. shows the same result. The DVCProHD RawDV clip is treated as DVCPro clip, certainly, a scrambled video clip. We believe it is the QT7 problem cause if a DVCProHD video is recorded in MOV format, QT7 and FCP are able to play it back correctly. - Updated: November 6, 2006

    23. After re-formatting the CitiDISK by Shining Utilitly Suite, now the PC/XP does not boot up. How to fix it? - Top

    1. Insert the Window XP original CD to boot the computer.
    2. Select to Repair the system (enter with "R").
    3. You will get C:\ on the screen. Then, give "fixmbr" to create one new MBR. If the new MBR is given, the system is recovered. - Updated: June 12, 2007
